  <p>Information: Martha Irene Welling, 81, of Ripley, departed this life Monday, January 28, 2002, in Jackson General Hospital after a long illness.  She was born December 20, 1920, in Clay County, a daughter of the late Elkana Lee and Sarah Goad Shaffer.  She was a homemaker, a 25-year resident of Ripley, and a Protestant.  Survivors include one daughter, Romona Guttormsen of Charleston; six stepdaughters, Maxine Eagle and Helen Fisher, both of Ripley, Debbie Brabham of Goodview VA, Carolyn Chancey of Harrisville, Yvonne Johnson of Conway SC, and Linda Warner of Hurricane; four stepsons, Larry, Donald, Carl and Dale Welling, all of Ripley; three grandchildren, Kimberly Wells of Sandyville, Robert Ramey and Robin Sanders, both of Florida; many step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert L. ""Johnny"" Smith and L. Ray Welling.  Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11:00 a.m. at Long & Fisher Funeral Home in Pocatalico.  Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery in Kenna.</p>
