Obituary Date: 1911-04-07

Information: Headquarters, Carl Shatto Post No. 28, G.A.R. Ripley, W. Va.-- To the Members of the Said Post -- I take this method of notifying you of the death of an honored and much loved member of this post.  Francis Walker, a Civil War veteran, a private in Co. K, 39 Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and for many years on the muster roll of our post, was mustered out at Coalville, Ohio, on the 27th day of March, 1911, and today is associated and musters with the large portion of the old army, camping over the river.      Comrade Walker enlisted in said Company and Regiment, January 12, 1861, discharged December 26, 1865, having served his country four years and twenty-seven days.  His regiment saw much hard service, which included the march to the sea under General Sherman.  In the battle of Atlanta, Georgia, he received a gunshot wound to the face, ball entered the right nasal orifice and ranging so as to lodge one and one-half inches below the right eye where it remained.  He suffered from this wound continously and no doubt caused his final breakdown, and for years total disability and his death was largely due to that cause.  He was a good citizen, and his sons and other relatives who survive him, to whom we tender sincere sympathy, may justly feel proud of his soldier record as well as the name he leaves behind.  We wish to express our regrets that owing to the age and infirmity of most of the members of the Post and the very inclement weather, they were prevented from attending the funeral in a body.   Most sincerely, W. W. Riley, Commander    (from the Betty Kessel McIntyre collection)   Mountaineer 03/31/1911 - Mr. Francis Walker, who was for many years a resident of Jackson County, residing near Sidneyville on the Ravenswood Pike, died Tuesday at the home of his only sister, Mrs. Martha Stout, near Coalville, Ohio.  Deceased was about 70 years of age.  Three or four years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered.  He is survived by four sons, Robert and Rolla Walker of Parkersburg, John Walker of Kansas, and Goff Walker of this place.  The remains will be brought to Ripley this (Thursday) evening and interment in the Boyce Cemetery tomorrow.  (McIntyre)
