Information: Otho Miner Stone, son of Elias and Ollie A. (Shinn) Stone, was born at the Stone homestead below Ripley, Jackson county, West Virginia, March 7th 1856, died at his home near Cottageville, March 8th, 1921, aged 65 years and 1 day. He lived on his father's farm until nineteen years of age when he engaged in the profession of teaching, which calling he pursued for four years; later he embarked in the mercantile business at Silverton, this county, where he conducted a country store and served as post master for a period of nine years. In the fall of 1891, he moved to a farm near Cottageville where he resided until his death. On November 25th, 1879, he was united in marriage to Lelia F. Douglass, daughter of Calvin Douglass, and to this union five children were born, one son and four daughters, namely, Homer of Holloway, Ohio, Mrs. E. A. Johnson of Chester, W. Va., Mrs. William Carnahan of Apple Grove, Ohio, Mrs. F. E. VanMeter of Henderson, W. Va., and Florence Ella, at home. In early life he was converted and joined the United Brethren Church at Silverton. Otho Stone was energetic and enthusiatic in every thing he undertook to do. Notwithstanding, he was encumbered with a useless and painful limb from his childhood, which at times was very painful, he heroically tackeled the work of farming on his one limb and crutch and was quite successful although working under great difficulties. He has been in failing health for some time but never confined to his bed and died sitting in his chair. He bore pain cheerfully. The evening before he died he said he was happy and realized that he was going to a better world where all is peace and joy and where sickness, pain and death can not enter and left a message to his family and friends asking them to meet him in heaven. We hope the desire of his heart was realized and that his family and friends will heed his admonition. Peace to his ashes. Those who mourn their loss are his beloved wife and five children, seven grandchildren, an aged father, one sister and two brothers. The funeral services were conducted by G. W. Simpson. X.X.
