Information: George W. Staats, son of Elijah Staats, was born Jan. 1, 1842, and died April 14, 1923 at his home at Parkersburg.  He was born on the old Staats farm near the present village of Evans in Jackson County, West Virginia, then Virginia.  It was on this farm that his grandfather, Abraham Staats settled about the year 1799.  He served as Sergeant of Co. F. , 4th W. Va. Calvary in the Civil War, afterward he served as Lieutenant of Captain Kennedy's Company of State Guards, located at Ripley. While a member of this Company in 1864, he was united in marriage to Dienna Waugh, a daughter of Andrew and Julia Ann Johnson Waugh.  At the close of the Civil War, he moved to the farm near Evans, where he resided until in recent years when he moved to Parkersburg, excepting about three years between 1878 and 1881, when he lived in Ravenswood.  He served as deputy sheriff for a time after the Civil War and as a member of the House of Delegates of this county for the term from 1892-94.  Mr. Staats married for a second wife, Mrs. Frone Casto, widow of James Casto; but no children were born to this union.  The deceased is survived by his wife and the following children as well as by several grandchildren, Dr. Charles O. and Dr. Harlan Staats of Charleston, Mrs. Anna Ferguson of Charleston, Mrs. Cora Fisher, Mrs. Georgia L. Hodges, Miss Lorena M. Staats and Attorney Edgar R. Staats of Parkersburg.  Mr. Staats was a honest man, a loyal citizen, a good neighbor, a good worthy husband and father, and a conscientious christian who was ever faithful to the teaching of the lowly Nazerene.  His presence will be missed not only by his family and his relatives but also by his many friends.      Harold Staats
