Information: Elias E. Staats, son of Elijah and Anne Staats, was born at Evans, January 16, 1848 and died at the same place November 6, 1922, being 74 years, 9 months and 11 days old. He was united in marriage to Rosalie Virginia Evans on November 22, 1877 by Rev. Shaw of the Methodist church. To this union one son and four daughters were born. The oldest was the son, whose name was Cletus and who died April 28, 1894. The daughters who are all living were Flora A. who married Charles A. Peters of Rowlesurg, W. Va., Mamie Ethel who married T. Clayton Parsons of Ripley, W. Va., Lilly Florence who married Wade W. King of Sycamore, Ill., and Amy Gertrude who married A. C. Hibbard of Sycamore, Ill. Mr. Staats was the youngest living child of a family of twenty-two children and of these but two survive him, George W. Staats of Parkersburg and Mrs. Adeline Stutler of Ripley. He was converted while a young boy and joined the Methodist church, later transferring his membership to the United Brethren church. He lived a consistent christian life and was regarded as one of the best citizens of the county. Funeral services were conducted at the Evans Methodist church on Wednesday by Rev. W. M. Slaughter, pastor of the Seventh Street U.B. Church of Parkersburg with the Ripley United Brethren choir singing in the presence of a very large assemblage of relatives and friends. The floral tribute was very beautiful and exemplified the regard which his relatives and friends had for the honorable life Mr. Staats had lived. (copied by Ada Ruth Sayre)
