Obituary Date: 1935-08-02
Information: H. A. Southall, aged 67, died in the Staats Hospital at Charleston at 1:30 Wednesday morning after a two day fight by physicians and surgeons to save his life. A ruptured bowel was the cause of his death. Mr. Southall, who lived on Route 2, near Ripley, worked on the farm as usual Monday morning and at 10 o'clock he became suddenly ill and was in great pain. Dr. E. D. Staats was called to the home and after an examination said that the bowels had ruptured and it would be necessary to rush him to a hospital without delay. He was taken to the Staats Hospital where an operation was performed at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. There was little hope for his recovery from that time. Three blood transfusions were given but they did no good. When Mr. Southall was a young man, he was struck by lightening, his clothes stripped from his body and even the boots he wore were torn from his feet, but he was unhurt. His brother, who was with him at the time, was killed instantly [Albert, age 15, died 3 June 1891]. He is survived by the widow and the following children, Clarence, D. D., Otis, Gay, Ray, and Marjorie Southall, all of Ripley. The body was brought to the home Wednesday and funeral services were held the same day and burial was in the Casto cemetery, near Fairplain.
