Information: FORMER RIPLEY SPORTS STAR DIES INSTANTLY - A former outstanding Ripley athlete was instantly killed in a tragic auto-trailer truck collision about noon Wednesday at the junction of U. S. Rt. 33 and 374 near Rockbridge, Ohio. The victim was Allen Eugene Slater, 26, who was an outstanding basketball, football and baseball player while attending Ripley high school where he graduated with the class of 1957. Slater, who was an employee of the C. H. I. Awning Company of Columbus, was traveling southward on U. S. 33 when he collided with the tractor-trailer rig which was driven by Robert L. Calvelage, 27, of Ft. Jennings, Ohio. The truck driver has been cited by the Ohio Highway patrol for driving left of center and other charges were to be placed later. The patrol said Cavelage's rig was following two other northbound autos. When the first car slowed down to make a left turn, the second auto also slowed, but the rig jackknifed when Cavelage applied his brakes, the patrol reported. Officers said Slater pulled his car to the right, but was unable to avoid the crash. Calvelage was treated at Hicking Valley Hospital for head lacerations, a broken tooth, a fractured nose and body bruises, the patrol said. Funeral services for Slater were held in Columbus Saturday and burial followed in the Glen Rest cemetery at Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Born July 1, 1938 at Kenna, W. Va., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Slater. Surviving are his mother; a sister, Mrs. Joanne Wheeler of Columbus, and a brother, Kermit L. of Columbus.
