Obituary Date: 2011-11-06

Information: Elisabeth Zbinden Shipley passed away on Monday, October 31, 2011, at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.  She was 75.  Mrs. Shipley had battled successfully with cancer for a number of years only to succumb very quickly when the cancer returned just a few weeks ago.  Mrs. Shipley was born in the City of Biel/Bienne in Switzerland on July 24, 1936, the daughter of Hans and Ida Zbinden.  She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Frederick H. Shipley of Ripley; her daughter, Mary Elisabeth Clendenin; and granddaughter, Reilly Elisabeth Clendenin.  She is also survived by her sister, Greti Dobler; and brother, Hans Zbinden of Switzerland; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews in the U.S. and in Switzerland.      Mr. and Mrs. Shipley moved to Jackson County in 1976 after they had contributed some years of service with Up With People, a program serving high school and college aged men and women, promoting outreach and understanding among people of all races and backgrounds.  They made their home on a farm just outside Ripley.  Mrs. Shipley was educated at the Handelsschule in Biel/Bienne and acquired an associate degree in respiratory therapy from the University of Charleston.  She was a therapist with Jackson General Hospital.  Mrs. Shipley was a ruling elder with First United Presbyterian Church of Ravenswood.  As a high school student, she was a Cub Scout troop leader in Biel.  She loved downhill skiing here and in Switzerland and loved to return to her homeland for long walks in the Alps.  She loved people and was best known for her cooking and baking skills, running a well known catering service in the 1970s and '80s.  No one was ever a stranger to her; she had a ready wit, a contagious smile and an infectious laugh.  She always had a 'can do', 'it will all work out', attitude toward life's problems.     A time for visitation will  be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, November 11 at Waybright Funeral Home in Ripley.  A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, at First United Presbyterian Church of Ravenswood.  Interment will occur later in Cockeysville Md.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a tax-deductible donation to the Jackson County Community Foundation in memory of Mrs. Shipley.  Your gift will be placed in the Elisabeth Shipley Memorial Scholarship Fund providing scholarships to Jackson county students for years to come.  Envelopes for that purpose will be made available.  The Lord gave her to me.  He has now taken her home.  Blest be the name of the Lord.
