Information: DEATH FROM CANCER- John W. Shamblen of Vicars, Roane county, was relieved Saturday night from his long and severe suffering from cancer of the bowels, by death, for which he had fervently prayed for some months. He was reduced to a mere skeleton, the care-takers being able to take him in their arms as a child. The remains were committed to the grave at Fairplain, Monday afternoon, after a fitting funeral by Revs. J. W. Martin and T. H. Rymer and the Odd Fellows, where rest two of deceased's children. Mr. Shamblen was forty-nine years old, was born and reared near Goldtown, moved to Ripley after being elected constable, after some years residence here moved to Roane county. He was elected Justice there and at the time of death was chairman of the Republican county committee and deputy assessor of Roane. He was always retarded by lack of discipline and meager school attendance because of the death of the father about the time of his son's birth, but possessed much natural shrewdness and adaptability and was always an entertaining, forcible man of close observation. While resident of Ripley, he lost his wife, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alias Boggess, by death and was married a year or two later to Miss Entzminger. A widow and children from each marriage survive. Rev. Martin, who preached the funeral discourse, visited Mr. Shamblen a few weeks before death and was told all was well.
