Information: Mary Jane Hunt Sayre was born March 2, 1827 in what is now Jackson County, West Virginia. She departed this life May 12, 1923 aged 96 years, 3 months and 12 days. In 1842 she was united in marriage to Elijah Sayre with whom she lived happily for sixty-eight years. On October 10, 1910 the unwelcome guest visited her home and claimed her companion. To this union were born ten children, six of whom survive. Freeian and Fisher died in infancy. Wesley, lived to be a middle aged man, became a farmer and merchant. He died in 1909 at Angerona, West Virginia (Killed by bull-Ada Ruth Sayre note). Ruble, lived to womanhood, became the wife of James Barnette, she died in 1881. The surviving children are: J. C. and E. E. of Evans, W. Va.; D. L. of Danstown; Jasper of near Cottageville; Sarah Ann, wife of Allen Shinn of Cow Run; Louise, wife of Jonathan Chase of Ripley, W. Va. And for ninety-six years she has gone in and out among us. She was a mother to the motherless besides rearing her own children she raised sixteen orphans to womanhood and manhood. The night was never too cold or dark, the distance too great if the sick needed help, so, she has made herself all these years a blessing to others, for the lame she has walked and for the helpless she has ceaselessly toiled. Her home has been a shelter to the poor, weak, strong and afflicted, No wanderer was ever turned from her door--friends, strangers and foes-treated alike. And I imagine I could hear the Savior say as her spirit wafted from earth to heaven, ""In as much as ye did it to the least of these ye did it unto me."" from handwritten copy--Ada Ruth Sayre Obit Collection
