Information: LAFAYETTE SAYRE, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, IS CALLED- Lafayette Sayre, 85 year old Civil War veteran of Evans, who was known to his many friends as ""Uncle Lafe"", died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. A. Shinn, there last Friday afternoon at two o'clock after an illness of several weeks. His death had been expected for several days. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon and burial followed in the Otterbein cemetery. Lafayette Sayre, son of Joseph and Rachel Maguire Sayre, was born near Evans, West Virginia on May 17, 1848 and departed this life February 2, 1934, aged 85 years, 8 months and 15 days. He was the last member of this immediate family to walk into the valley of the Shadow of Death. All brothers and sisters and also his parents preceded him in death. All his life was spent in the Evans community in which he was born, except a few years which he spent in Ohio, near Gallipolis. On September 30, 1869, he was united in marriage with Nancy H. Lewis and to his union the following children were born, viz; Finley A. and William Wirt Sayre of near Muncie, Indiana, J. W. and Melvin Sayre of Sandyville, Edgar Sayre of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Bertie Shinn of Evans. Two sons preceded him in death, Walter, who died at the age of six years and Otis O> who died February 26, 1920. Mrs. Sayre, his wife and companion for thirty-five years, passed away from among the living on August 4, 1904. In 1907 he was again married, this time to Sallie Kester Beaty who died on February 7, 1921.
