Information: Hayward M. ""Pete"" Sayre, 66, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away on July 21, 2007, at the Lake City Florida Veteran's Hospital after an extended illness. He was born on July 1, 1941 in Cottageville, the only child of the late Senator Virgil ""Brad"" Sayre and Justine Wright Sayre, who was the second cousin of Orvil and Wilbur Wright. Pete attended school in Ripley before moving to Melbourne, FL, where he finished school and entered the US Marine Corps in January of 1959. Pete spent the next 20 years serving and protecting our country as a communications chief. He received many, many awards throughout his career including a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service from the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Cherry Point, NC. Pete retired from the US Marines in January 1979 with the rank of Gunnery Sargeant. Upon retirment, Pete came to Waycross, where the Waycross Police Department employed him as a police officer. He also worked as a 9-1-1 dispatcher and for the Ware County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff. Pete was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 70, Waycross. He was also a life member of the VFW. He was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his wife Mary frances Cocuzza Sayre of Waycross, GA; daughters Bonita Lea Sowers and husband Isaac of Amanda, OH, and Justine McLaughlin and husband Christopher of Waycross, GA; stepdaughters Mary El-Kasas of Henryville, PA, and Angela Cocuzza Gordon and husband Kenyatta of Waycross, GA; stepson Paul Cocuzza of Saylorsburg, PA; grandchildren Danielle Sowers, Isaac Sowers, and Dallas Sowers, all of Amanda, OH; Geoffrey Boring of Waycross, GA; Christopher El-Kasas and Ashley Cocuzza of Henrville, PA, and Kenyatta Jalen ""KJ"" Gordon of Waycross, GA; numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and several other relatives living in West Virginia. Service at Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel and burial at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville, GA.
