Death Notice:

Obituary Date: 1949-11-11

Information:                 Elmer Ray, the 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Rossie Ray of Vicars, Roane County, near Fletcher, fired a .22 caliber pistol bullet through his heart Sunday and died instantly.  He was a grandson of the late Oke Ray.  Relatives said the rash act was the result of a fit of temper.  Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Gandee had spent the day at the Ray home and Mr. Ray was going to Charleston with them.  The son wanted to go along for the automobile ride and when he was told that he could not go, he threatened to shoot himself if they didn’t permit him to go along.  When he was given to understand that he could not go dashed into the house, got the .22 pistol and while standing in the living room fired the bullet into his heart and died instantly.  Funeral services were held at the Fairview Church, Rev. D. C. Guthrie officiating, and the body was laid to rest in the Ferrell Cemetery.  (Betty Kessel McIntyre obit collection)
