Information: Porter Henry Rardin, who was the publisher of the Jackson Herald from 1916 until December 31, 1921, died in a Beckley hospital Wednesday morning bringing to an end an illness of several years duration. He had been critically ill for several days and death had been expected. The funeral service was held at the Chambers-Kyger Funeral Home in Ravenswood Friday afternoon with the Rev. Paul Sutton of the Walton Memorial Church in charge and burial was in the Ravenswood cemetery. Mr. Rardin, who was born near Sherman on May 30, 1880, was a widely known Jackson countian and always maintained his legal address at Ripley after coming here just after the turn of the century. He taught several terms of school in the county and in 1910 he was elected county superintendent of schools and was re-elected in 1914. In 1916 he formed a company with the late R. P. Shinn, Congressman Harry C. Woodyard, John M. Baker and W. E. Baker and they purchased the Jackson Herald. He was general manager of the business and editor until 1921 when he accepted appointment as Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue under former Governor A. B. White. He served in that capacity until 1925 when he became auditor for the State Tax Department and he served in that capacity until 1933 when he entered private business in Beckley. Ill health forced his retirement from business in 1944. He was 67 years of age at the time of his death, and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ella Howard and Mrs. Mollie Slaven, and a brother, John Rardin, all of Sherman. His parents, Samuel and Melissa Burch Rardin, two sisters, Mrs. Eva Bever and Mrs. Emma Burdette, and four brothers, Isaac, Walter, William and Dr. Clarence Rardin, all preceded him in death.
