Information: Mary Patricia ""Pat"" Prowse, 84, of Cottageville, died Feb. 2, 2011, at her home. Born Dec. 2, 1926 in Ripley, she was a daughter of the late John Herman Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Hood Rhodes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Prowse of Cottageville; and two brothers, Fredrick and John H. Rhodes, both of Cottageville. She was a 1944 graduate of Ripley High School. She graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing on Sept. 14, 1947. She worked as head RN for the Pediatric Department in a Washington D.C. hospital. She was the recipient of the Golden Horseshoe Award. She worked for several years at the law firm of Miller & Chevelle in Washington, D.C. She received the Hometown Hero Award, given for her love and devotion to animals. She managed the Jackson County Animal Shelter in Cottageville for 30 years, where she began as a volunteer. She wrote Pandora's column in the local newspaper for 25 years, keeping the public informed weekly about the Jackson County Animal Shelter. She served for several years on the Housing Authority Board and she taught yoga for several years. She was awarded the Outstanding Citizen Award for her service to the community. She was a member of Kith'n Hills Theatre Group and a member of Greenhills Country Club. Survivors include nieces, Jennifer Lynn Rhodes Parker of Cottageville, Audra Danielle Parker of Washington and Kalin Marie Bigler of Cottageville; nephews, John Patrick Rhodes ofCottageville and Matthew David Bigler of Cutler, Ohio; and former sister-in-law, Tina Perkins, Washington. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with Pastor Scott Mapes officiating. The body was cremated. Friends may visit the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, Cottageville, WV 25239.
