Information: RIPLEY - Valeria Moriah Brotherton Powers, 89, of Ripley, departed this life on March 1, 2006, at her home following an extended illness.  She was born February 12, 1917, on Fisher Ridge, a daughter of the late Lewis Roscoe and Mary Hazel (Coe) Brotherton.  Her family were pioneers of Fisher Ridge.  She was a descendant of General Andrew Lewis.  She was a homemaker and was a charter member of the Ripley Tabernacle Baptist Church where she had been a member of the choir for over 35 years.  She was a charter member of the South Hills CEOS Club and served several terms as president.  She was a past Jackson County Belle and represented the county at the State CEOS in Gleville.  She was an avid quilter, dried flower picture designer, and flower gardener.  She was instrumental in forming the first Jackson County Quilt Show and continued to be active each year.  The strength of her love and her hugs will always live in the hearts of her friends and family.  She always had a kind word and a smile for everyone she encountered.  Survivors include her son, David Powers of Ripley; daughters Diane Suchanoff of Bridgeton, NJ and St. Cloud FL and Rebecca Everly of Ripley; brothers, Neil Brotherton of Ravenswood and John Brotherton of Charleston; sister Mary Rawlings of South Charleston; grandchildren, Paulette Campana, Sheryl Webb, Jeff Powers, Scott Donat, Laura Riddle, and Dewight Runion; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law and her husband Grace and Norman Madan of Coral Gable, FL.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Hiram Powers; brothers, Robert D. Brotherton, Reese R. Brotherton, and James R. Brotherton; sisters, Eleanor Lynne Brotherton and Regina Skeen.  Funeral services were 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Casto Funeral Home in Evans with the Rev. William Sullivan and the Rev. Herman Jones officiating.  Burial followed in the Fairplain Cemetery in Ripley. The family would like to thank Kanawha Hospice for all the physical and spiritual support they provided to Valeria.
