Information: DR. PICKERING, AGED PHYSICIAN, DIES WHILE MAKING CALL - Dr. W. D. Pickering, 84 year old physician of Lone Cedar, died suddenly Sunday afternoon about five o'clock, bringing to an end more than half a century of ministering to the sick and dying in his home community. He died, friends said, as they believed he would have wished , the end coming suddenly as he stood by the bedside of a sick patient in the home of W. T. Nohe at Belleville. He had been active during the day and had visited a number of his patients. He was born in Burning Springs, Wirt county, the son of Charles R. and Sarah Elizabeth Petty Pickering, and had lived at Lone Cedar, below Belleville, since childhood. For 56 years he practiced medicine in Belleville, Jackson county, and at nearby places in Ohio, and was well known in Ripley. Dr. Pickering was a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Baltimore, Md., and was a member of the Academy of Medicine and the U. B. Church. Surviving are his wife, Nora Smith Pickering; one son, Rodney of Lone Cedar; one daughter, Mrs. Carl Davis of Parkersburg; two brothers, James of Belleville and Thomas of Wellsburg, W. Va; two granddaughters, Mrs. Evans Stealey of Parkersburg and Mrs. G. H. Bartlett of Jackson, Mich.; one grandson, Charles H. Pickering of Glen Falls, N. Y.; and four great-grandchildren. A large crowd of people gathered at the Methodist church in Belleville yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon to pay a last tribute of respect to the physician who had labored so long among them. The funeral rites were simple and brief and the casket was lowered into a grave in the nearby cemetery and the life and labors of Dr. Pickering were at an end but the memory of him will linger long in the hearts of the people of Grant district.
