Obituary Date: 1936-08-28

Information: William Blankenship, 18 year old Rockcastle youth, died at the Kessel Hospital in Ripley, Wednesday morning from injuries received in an automobile accident Sunday afternoon in which he received a broken neck which left the greater part of his body paralized.  Members of his family, including his father and mother, two sisters and Rev. and Mrs. C. C. Nichols, were with him when the end came. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wed Blankenship and was attending an all day church service at Mt. Zion Sunday.  He and his cousin, Dayton Blankenship, went out to Harmon's store in the latter's Ford roadster to get gasoline.  Dayton was driving the car and in turning around, his brakes failed to hold and the car went down a hill backwards.  It rolled over twice in it's 30 foot plunge after it had gone through a fence, observers said.  He was rushed to the hospital soon after and a number of the folks from that section of the county came to Ripley to await the news of the extent of his injuries.  Dayton Blankenship, the driver of the car, was injured only slightly, injured in his right arm and beyond that said that he was not hurt.  When he saw that the brakes would not hold and that the car would plunge down the hill, he said that he jumped out but that his companion did not get out before the plunge.  In addition to the parents, he is survived by two sisters, Mabel and Macel Blankenship, both at home.  The body was taken to his home at Rockcastle Wednesday and funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion U. B. church in Putnam County.
