Information: Death Claims Retired Attorney A heart attack Saturday evening claimed the life of Emil A. Nichols, 65, of Ripley, retired attorney and husband of JACKSON HERALD editor, Dot Nichols. Nichols collapsed Saturday evening at his Evans Road residence. County paramedics, Ripley firefighters and the emergency room staff at Jackson General Hospital worked fervorously in an attempt to revive him, but were unsuccessful. Nichols was born in Wetumka, Oklahoma, son of the late Robert Raymond Nichols and Minnie Nichols Derry. He was a graduate of Ripley High School, West Virginia University and the George Washington University School of Law. Nichols was an attorney in Prince George's County, Md. for 29 years. He was an assistant state attorney in Maryland and served on the Maryland Attorney General's staff for 14 years. He was a member of the Prince George's County Bar Association and the Maryland State Bar Association. Nichols was a Marine veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart and a Presidential Unit Citation. Survivors in addition to HERALD editor Dot Nichols include two stepchildren, HERALD publisher Rick Simmons of Ripley and Flora Lee (Chirpy) Simmons of West Palm Beach, Fla. Visitation was held Tuesday evening at Parsons Funeral Home. A memorial service was scheduled this morning (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Elizabeth Walker officiating. Burial will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Arllington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
