Information: Among the many things that transpired on West Virginia Day, there was a small funeral held at McKown Family Cemetery on a hill just below Ripley.  Bryan McKown had died in Michigan on Feb. 27, 1987, and his body was cremated.  The ashes were brought by the family on Saturday, June 20, 1987, and the Rev. Harold Custer of the Epworth United Methodist Church held the graveside service.  Bryan McKown was the son of the late Penny Edwin and Emma McKown, who lived on their farm at the mouth of Parchment just below Ripley.  He was the last of 10 children to die, and was born Sept. 26, 1896, being 90 years old.  He began working in Akron, Ohio, at an early age and continued working there for several years.  The greater part of his life was spent in Michigan where he worked as foreman for the Chrysler Corporation before retirement.  Three children were born to his first marriage: a daughter, Mrs. Norma Springer of Ohio, and two sons, John Perry McKown of Spring Hill, Florida, and Bryan, Jr., who was killed in World War II, being shot down in a plane over an island near Japan.  His body was returned and buried in Ohio.  A later marriage in Michigan produced  the following children:  Mrs. Betty Luther, Mrs. Shirley Edam and Edward, all of Michigan.  The request he had made to different members of his family that he wanted to be buried in the little cemetery with his parents and his brother, Ralph, who was killed in World War I, has been fulfilled.
