Information: David Leslie McGuire, 64, of Rt. 1, Ripley, died Wednesday, June 3, 1987 at home of an apparent heart attack. He was born April 11, 1923, at Burnwell, WV, a son of the late John Milton and Maude M. Branham McGuire. He was in the South Pacific with the 11th Airborne Division during World War II where he saw combat on New Guinea, Bataan, Leyte, Luzon and Mindoro of the Philippines Campaign. He participated in two parachute combat jumps and received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. He served with the 101st Airborne Division and the Fifth Army Corps and was a senior instructor at the Airborne School of the Army. His career spanned three wars, WWII, Korean and Vietnam. He was retired as a sergeant with 21 years' service. He was a member of Retired Enlisted Associates, DAV, VFW, American Legion, Non-Commissioned Officers Association for Uniformed Services. He was an employee of the state Department of Employment Security. He had been a resident of Evans for the past 21 years. Surviving: wife, Bernice Evelyn Wayne McGuire; son, David Wayne of Ripley; daughters, Deena Kay Smith and Donna Karen Lacy, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; brothers, John of Cincinnati, Don and Dexter, both of Alderson, Dan of Farmville, Va., Patrick of Salem, Ore.; sisters, Helen Vanhorn of Louisa, Ky., Patsy Whitt of Carbon; four grandchildren. Service was Saturday in Casto Funeral Home, Evans, with the Rev. John Icenhower officiating. Burial was in Creston Cemetery, near Evans.
