Information: Jesse Lester Mays, 77, of 514 N. Division St., Carterville, died at 7 p.m. Sunday in Herrin Hospital. He had been hospitalized since a Wednesday traffic accident on Old Illinois 13 between Carterville and Marion. Mr. Mays was a retired civil aeronautics engineer who worked in the development of airports at Carbondale, Williamson County, Harrisburg, Cairo, Carmi and Sparta. He also worked on construction projects in the Midwest, and southern states that included bridges, dams, locks, ordinance plants and canals. He also was a school teacher. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Carterville, and a member of the Williamson Lodge No. 802, AF and AM. He was a veteran of World War I. He was born July 17, 1896 in Jackson County, West Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. James Mays. His wife, the former Mildred Wolfe, died Dec. 8. Survivors are two daughters, June Havlin and Evelyn Stewart, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, Earl, also of Cincinnati; a brother, Lee S. Mays, Ripley, W. Va.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Riggin Funeral Home, Carterville. The Rev. Merle Melton will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Carterville. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. (From the Southern Illinoisan, Monday, Jan. 28, 1974)
