Information: W. E. Mathews, of Charleston, died at Webster Springs July 14th.  Mr. Mathews had been in ill health and had gone to Webster Springs to recuperate. While there he was stricken with apoplexy on Tuesday and died on the following Saturday.  The remains were brought to Ripley Monday and on Tuesday he was laid by the side of his son in the Pine Hill Cemetery.  He leaves a wife and two sons, Joseph Maurice and William; three brothers, Otmer, Telford and McCray, of Charleston; a father, Robert Mathews; and three sisters, Mesdames J. R. Progler and Sam Jones of Ripley, and Virginia Gillilian of Charleston.  Mr. Mathews was a successful businessman.  He was quite a church worker, having become a member of the M. E. Church when quite young and had been an active worker ever since. He was a 32nd degree Mason and an Odd Fellow.  The Odd Fellows conducted the funeral services at Ripley.    (from the Betty Kessel McIntyre collection)
