Obituary Date: 1931-04-03

Information: Mrs. Ida Maddox, wife of I. T. Maddox of Ripley, died at her home here last Sunday morning after a brief illness, her death coming very unexpectedly and without warning.  She had been slightly ill for several days but her condition did not become alarming until Saturday night when she developed double pneumonia, which follwed in the wake of a short illness caused by influenza.  Mrs. Maddox was born at Downing, Meigs county, Ohio, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Laura Lee, on February 6, 1865, and at the time of her death was 66 years, one month and 23 days of age.  When only a girl she came with her parents to Jackson county where they settled on what is known as Jim Ridge in Ripley district, and it was there that she grew to womanhood.  On October 12, 1884, she married Irving T. Maddox and to his union the following children were born:  Roscoe Maddox of Toppenish, Washington, James Roy Maddox of Grafton, Charles Hess Maddox of Charleston and Ashford Dale Maddox of Ripley.  Three children, Wade Lee, Oma A. and another infant child, preceded the mother in death.  Three brothers, J. V. and R. G. Lee of Dunbar and W. A. Lee of Gallipolis, also survive.  Mrs. Maddox was one of the outstanding women of the town, was affiliated with the Baptist church and auxiliary organizations where she was one of the leading members and always active in the work of the community and the church.  Her passing will be deeply regretted by the people of the town, who extend their sympathy to the surviving members of the family. The funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock under the direction of Rev. E. E. White, pastor of the Baptist Temple, who was assisted by Rev. E. H. Ritchie of the M.E. church, South.  The body was then taken to the family plot in Pine Hill cemetery where it was interred.  The active pall-bearers at the funeral were:  B. F. Rader, F. A. Casto, J. F. Duke, W. D. Hinzman, Dr. C. C. Adams, Walter Tolley, W. A. Harrison and D. W. Greer.
