Death Notice:

Obituary Date: 1935-12-06

Information: Funeral services of Charles Green Maddox, 77 year old farmer of near Given, who died at noon on Wednesday of last week, were held Friday at the Grasslick Baptist church at Kenna, with Dr. Fred Slaughter in charge.  A large crowd of relatives and friends who had known and revered him in life were present for the last rites.  Mr. Maddox had been seriously ill for several days prior to death.  Friends wre notified on Tuesday that he was not expected to live, by Wednesday morning it was only a matter of hours.  Charles Green Maddox, son of William D. Maddox, was born February 15, 1858 and departed this life November 27, 1935, age 77 years, 9 months and 12 days, being the last surviving member of his father's family.  He was united in marriage to Delilah Belle Hill, daughter of the late Thomas M. and Rebecca Jane [Kessell] Hill, on April 14, 1887, and to this union were born the following children.  Three sons and two daughters: Kelly C. and Roma Boyd Maddox, preceded him to the great beyond.  Surviving are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Ina Waugh of Ostrander, Ohio, Mrs. Pearlie Harrison of Duncan, Herbert Maddox of Given, and a foster daughter, Ora Wolfe.  He was a kind husband and father and a highly respected citizen and obliging friend to all.  He lived a Godly life before them.  He gave his children the best training educationally and was himself a successful teacher in the public schools for many years.  He was converted and joined the Grasslick Baptist church and remained as an active member until the end.  He took an active part in the church work as superintendent and teacher in Sunday School.  The passing of men we love and trust makes a gap in the ranks of our earthly associations, which the procession of time cannot repair.  The coming of the death angel makes wounds which the remedial measures of life cannot heal.  The boatman will be there to extend the welcoming hand and with him we will embark for the farther shore on the swollen river of death.   [Betty Kessel McIntyre obit collection]
