Obituary Date: 1947-12-05
Information: Charles Wesley LEWIS, son of William and Susan SIRKS LEWIS, was born March 12, 1860 and departed this life November 21, 1947, aged 87 years, 8 months and 9 days. On Dec. 2, 1882 he was united in marriage to Eliza Eleanor PRINGLE, who preceded him in death March 4, 1946. To this union were born eight children: Mrs. Bessie HANNING, Mrs. Eva CASTO, Mrs. Rosa HANNING, and Mr. Fred LEWIS, all of Ripley Rt. 2.; Mr. H. E. LEWIS of Buffalo, Mrs. Ruby FRENCH of Given, and Mrs. Velma MCCLOUD of Dunbar. One child died in infancy. He leaves to mourn their loss, other than the children, 24 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. His vivid memory of the hardships encountered during the Civil War was a means of learning to those who knew him intimately. This was deeply implanted on his mind since the Civil War left him the soul survivor of his family. His father and mother were both tragedies of the Civil War period, and to his knowledge he had no living relatives. (from the Betty Kessel McIntyre obit collection)
