Obituary Date: 1923-06-22
Information: John Landfried was born in Lietwiler, Bavaria, Germany, September -- 1845, and died in Ripley, West Virginia, June 19, 1923, aged nearly 78 years. He crossed the ocean with his parents, Henry and Elizabeth Landfried, from Germany to Virginia, where they settled in this county, near Ripley, when he was two years of age. He learned the shoemaker's trade in Ripley, being an apprentice of his uncle, George Landfried, when a boy and afterwards worked at his trade in Wheeling for several years and then enlisted in the United States Army about 1867, where he served for thirty years and was honorably discharged in the Philippine Islands in 1898, being too old for reenlistment, which was a great disappointment to him as it was during the Spanish-American War in which he desired to further serve under the American flag. He has lived in Ripley since 1898 where on September 27, 1909, he was married to Mrs. Ella Hines, who survives him. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a faithful attendant at its services until stricken with his last sickness. He leaves a widow, one step-daughter, two brothers, and a number of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. (from the Betty Kessel McIntyre collection)
