Information: Retired Business Man Dies After Short Illness Hobart P. Landfried 77, of 412 North Church Street, Ripley, died Wednesday in Jackson General Hospital of cancer. He was a retired merchant, having owned and managed the Landfried Grocery and service station for many years near his home. Mr. Landfried attended the Epworth United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Survivors include two sons, Harold of Washington, D. C., and John of Ripley; one sister, Phyllis Milhoan of Florida. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, with the Rev. John Holbert officiating. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley. Following article from Jackson Herald dated June 4, 1964 Hobert Landfried Is Truly Great Citizen by C. E. Kessel In this day and time truly great Americans are few. But we have one right here in Ripley. He is Hobart Palmer Landfried! Mr. Landfried was born March 5, 1898 on Sycamore Creek near Ripley, a son of John and Ida Landfried. A sister, Phyllis, now Mrs. James Milhoan, was born on April 9, 1901. She lives in Parkersburg when not in Florida. On the 10th day of March, 1921, at the age of 23, Hobart married Ethel Wilson, daughter of Charles and Ida May Smith Wilson. Ethel died at the Staats hospital on August 16, 1946 after a long illness from diabetes. Two sons were born to this union while they lived in Charleston and operated, at one time at least, a dry cleaning establishment. On April 10, 1923, the first son was born. He was named Harold. The second son, John Wilson, was born December 4, 1926. The family moved to Ripley in May of 1931 and set up storekeeping at the north edge of the town. This establishment has become widely known at ""Landfried's Store"". It has been enlarged, remodeled and enlarged again. Modest in size, and with a small staff, this grocery has become a landmark in town. Through diligence and long hours of work this store has provided a good living for the family, a college education for the sons, Harold, who is in Washington, D. C. and also education for the other son, John, who is associated with his father in the business, heads a thriving insurance business, is the Chief of the Ripley Fire Department, a member of the County Board of Education and one of the most reliable and active leaders in the county. Hobart Palmer Landfried has every reason to be proud of his two sons and their families. He takes even more pride in the respect and admiration due him. Working since early life under a handicap most of us would have bowed to long ago, he has hacked away at the ""dams of life"" to keep the water freely flowing. He has paid his taxes, educated his family, owes no one a dime, has destroyed enough unpaid bills to provide a luxurious living for the rest of his life and has caused no one a hardship of any notice. You can bet your shirt, he is at this very moment filling his role in making America great. I along with everyone I know, hold him in highest esteem.
