Information: Samuel Dalton Kessell, 83, of Edgewood Summit, Charleston, died Aug. 16, 1996, in Memorial Division, CAMC, of lung cancer. He was a legislative auditor for the state of West Virginia, retiring in 1980. He received the George McJunkin Award in 1964 for discovering the St. Albans archaeological site on the banks of the Kanawha River. He was a member of the West Virginia Archaeology Society, Kanawha Valley Archaeology Society and West Virginia Arts and Crafts Guild He was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, and of the Masonic Lodge #54, Cottageville. Surviving: wife, Irene Kessell; son, Samuel Neal of Charleston; daughter, Sue Rosen of New York; brother, Estel of Spring Hill; sister, Faye Ruth Kessell Young of California; two grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, with the Rev. Ingram Hedgpeth and the Rev. Marilyn Hedgpeth officiating. Burial will be in Creston Memorial Park, Evans. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Friends of St. Albans Archeology, 77 Olde Main Plaza, St. Albans, W. Va. 25177. *He was the son of John Walter and Mary Brooks Kessell
