Obituary Date: 1936-09-18
Information: Okey A. Kessel, 52 years old and formerly a farmer of the Eighteen Mile Creek section of the county, was killed in a fall at the Kelly Axe Factory in Charleston Monday afternoon. The accident occurred about 2 o'clock in the afternoon and Mr. Kessel died several hours later in a Charleston hospital. He was doing carpentry work at the plant and was working on a scaffold about twenty feet high when he fell. The fall onto the concrete floor below resulted in a fractured skull, according to surgeons at the hospital, and he was also injured internally. When he fell, fellow workmen realized that he was seriously injured and they rushed him to a Charleston hospital. Relatives in this section were informed soon after of his serious condition. The funeral services were held at the Emma Chapel church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. J. W. Garrison in charge and burial was in the cemetery there. He was widely known in the southern section of the county and many of his friends and acquaintances were present for the funeral rites. He is survived by the widow, Cora M. Buckalew Kessel; three sons, Herbert, Robert and Carl; three daughters, Mrs. Verba Harris, of Sissonville, Mrs. Mabel Olian and Miss Hazel Kessel, both of Charleston; a brother, Edgar Kessel, of Charleston and a sister, Mrs. George (Verna) Simmons, of Wilmington, Ohio. For many years Mr. Kessel operated a farm in the Eighteen Mile Creek section but a few years ago he secured a position at Charleston and left the farm. He had been employed by the Kelly Axe Factory for a number of years and held a responsible position. [Okey and Cora were married on 19 April 1911 (JCMR)] [Betty Kessel McIntyre obit collection]
