Information: RIPLEY - James Corbin Kessel, 88, of Ripley, died Friday, October 28, 2005, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, following a long illness. He was born June 13, 1917, in Parchment Valley, a son of the late Delmer E. and Elizabeth Corbin Kessel. He was a retired teacher and principal with the Jackson County School System with 37 years of service. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Golden Rule Sunday School Class. He was treasurer of the Francis Asbury Educational Loan Fund of the WV United Methodist Conference for 30 years. He was a member of the Ripley Rotary Club since 1964, where he served as club president from 1965-66 and club secretary for 14 years. He was the District Governor's area representative, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow and contributor of the worldwide Polio Plus Campaign. He was a World War II Coast Guard Veteran and a fifty-year member of the Ripley American Legion Post #107. He received the Post Meritorious Award in 1978 and the Post Patriotism Award in 1980. He served as the City of Ripley Town Recorder for two years. He was a 60-year member and past member of the Ripley Lodge #16 AF&AM. He served as Past Worthy Patron of Ripley Chapter #17, Order of Eastern Star and was a member of Knights Templar and Scottish Rite Masons. He was a graduate of Marshall and West Virginia Universities. Survivors include 15 nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Anita Carol Kessel and eight brothers and sisters. Services will be held today, November 1, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Epworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Krimmel officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley, with Masonic Rites provided by Ripley Lodge #16, AF&AM. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church Memorial Building Fund, located at the corner of Church and North Streets in Ripley. Vail Funeral Home of Ripley is serving the family.
