Information: TWO BROTHERS DIE IN SUNDAY HOME BLAZE - Two brothers died of asphyxiation about ten o'clock Sunday night in a fire at their home on First avenue in Ripley. They were Floyd Bayer and Claude Bayer, both sons of Luther Bayer. The father was absent from the home as he fell on the ice here on December 18 and fractured a hip and has been a hospital patient since that time. Effective work by the Ripley firemen resulted in saving the home, but efforts to revive the two men who had been overcome by the smoke and heat were unsuccessful. Firemen received the call at exactly ten o'clock from someone who saw smoke coming from the home. The first of the fire trucks was at the scene in about three minutes. Other firemen were there within minutes and they entered the home. Claude Bayer was found in the bathroom of the home, and Floyd was found on a couch in another room. Claude was pronounced dead at the time, but Floyd was still breathing. Mouth to mouth resuscitation and a mechanical resuscitator were used, but to no avail. A total of 22 of the firemen were at the scene, Fire Chief John Landfried said. Coroner C. Royal Kessel said that both men were fully clothed when found. Fire Chief Landfried said that the fire had started in a bedroom of the home, and that there was heat and smoke damage throughout the building. He said that a lack of oxygen inside the house prevented it from bursting into flames. The bedroom portion of the home where the fired started was destroyed. Floyd was 44 years old and Claude was 39. Both served in the Navy during World War II. Both were born at Ripley, Floyd on April 29, 1918 and Claude on June 1, 1923. Survivors in addition to the father, are a brother, Carroll, serving in the Army at Fork Union, Virginia, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Morris of Reynoldsburg, O., and Mrs. Clara Wyatt of Reedy. A double funeral service will be held at the Parsons funeral home chapel this (Wednesday) afternoon at two o'clock with Rev. D. C. Guthrie officiating and the burial will be in Pine Hill cemetery.
