Information: Freda Wedge Batten, 94, of Ravenswood, departed this life Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at the Teays Valley Center, Hurricane, following an extended illness. She was born December 6,1912, at Leon, a daughter of the late Dorsel and Estella Sayre Wedge.  She was a graduate of Union High School, Cottageville. She married Brooks Batten in 1934 and moved to the Batten Farm near Ripley.  She moved to Ravenswood following her retirement from Cedar Lakes in 1972.  As one of the head cooks at Cedar Lakes from 1952-1972, Freda took great care to serve the best at every meal. Several generations of campers remember her hot rolls and the recipe is still used to this day.  Flower gardening was her passion and she cultivated blooms through all seasons in every part of her North Ritchie yard. She was a member of the North Ravenswood United Methodist Church. The Senior Church Visitation Group and her good neighbors often sustained her good spirits. Survivors include her son Kenneth B. Batten and wife Nelda of Chesterfield, V A; daughter Arlene B. Kuryla and husband Bill of Ripley; grandchildren Ken Batten Jr. and wife Susan with the U.S. Navy stationed in Japan; Brian Batten and wife Stephanie of Leesburg, VA; Paul Kuryla and wife Darla of Teays Valley and Matt Kuryla and wife Taryn of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren Logan Batten of Norfolk, V A; Anna, John and Catherine Kuryla all of Houston, TX; brother Charles Wedge and wife Leo of Leon; sisters Mary Rosa Keefer of Leon and Blanche Bletner of Buffalo; several nieces and nephews and special friends Mr. and Mrs. Bob Pendeton.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Brooks Batten; son Richard Keith Batten and brother Cecil Wedge.  Freda and her family are grateful for the tender care she received from caregiver Cindy Asbury and the staff at Teays Valley Center.  Service at Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley, and burial in Otterbein Cemetery, Evans.
