He departed this life at his home in Ripley February 7, 1934, at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 6 days. He lived most of his life on his farm and in 1917 the physical demands of farm life became too great for his slender constitution, he moved to Ripey and spent the remaining years in quiet retirement. He was the son of John A. and Myriam Hyre of whom but little is known. He had no recollection of seeing either. His mother dying when he was a few days old and his father before he reached the age of six. The loss of his parents at so early an age was a bitter experience and often referred to as one of the tragedies of his life. While he never knew the tender care of a father and mother, yet he was fortunate to fall into the hands of an aunt who raised him to manhood. He was united in marriage to Dora Alice Board and to this union were born eight sons and one daughter. One son dying in infancy and the only daughter, Mrs. T. J. Sayre, also departed this life in 1920. Mrs. Hyre preceded him to the Great Beyond nearly four fours. He is survived by seven sons, V. V. of Parkersburg, H. H. of Athens, R.R. and K. K. of Ripey, C. C. of Clarksburg, W. W. of Cincinnati, and F. F. of Dunbar, eight grandchildren, a great number of more distant relatives and numerous friends. He joined the church in early life, lived and died in the faith of his youth. He has earned the reward of the faithful and at the sunset of life peacefully slipped away to eternal rest. He was courageous in doing the things he believed right, generous toward all and simple in the philosophy of life. He was devoted to his family and left to them the rich legacy of an exempary life which means more than any other wealth he could transmit to posterity. He was a devoted father, and neighbor and a true friend. He made the world better while he lived and with Christian fortitude met every challenge of life. He will continue to live in the lives of those dearest to him and they will do well to emulate his virtues. With his work completed, with only a limited amout of suffering as we believe, characteristic of his life, he peacefully and quietly slipped away and is now basking in the sunlight of God's eternal love in a better world.
