Information: RAVENSWOOD - Wayne Wilson Hughes, 95, of Ravenswood, departed this life Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, following a brief illness. He was born July 4, 1909, in the little village of Flatwoods, three miles east of Cottageville, a son of the late Philip Sheridan Hughes and Margaret Belle (Wilson) Hughes. He was educated in a one-room school and graduated from Ravenswood High School in 1926. In 1927 he returned to Ravenswood Normal School, where he received his first Short Normal teaching certificate. His first two years teaching were in his home one-room school. He received his Bachelor degree in secondary education from Marshall University in 1941 and did some graduate work at Ohio University. He taught biology and social studies at Ravenswood High School, from which he retired in 1943. He was a member of the Ravenswood Lions Club, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a 50+ year member of Ashton Lodge #12, AF & AM of Ravenswood, and Nemesis Temple Shrine of Parkersburg. He was a lifelong member of Cedar Run United Methodist Church, serving as superintendent, teacher of the adult class, and choir leader. Mr. Hughes was a dairy farmer whose love of farming lasted a lifetime. In 1947, he became a supervisor for Western Soil Conservation District, consisting of Jackson, Mason and Putnam counties. He served continously for 51 years, a record for the state, and as Chairman of the Board for 35 years. In 1952 he won the Little Kanawha ""Farming for Better Living"" award; served as State Dairymen's President from 1950 to 1951; served as president of West Virginia Soil Conservation Supervisors Association from 1954 to 1955; served one term in the West Virginia House of Delegates; won Outstanding Supervisor of the Year Award for the Western Soil Conservation Supervisors Association in 1988; was inducted into the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame in 1988; and won the Jefferson Award for Community Service in 1999. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (McCoy) Hughes, whom he married in 1934; sisters, Edith Cora Dawson, Etta Marie Day, Ruby Alice Sheranko, Esther Pearl Hughes, and Helen Marie Hughes; brothers, Philip Sheridan Hughes, Jr., Blaine Young Hughes, and Ralston Reed Hughes; and daughter, Arabella Ann Hughes. Survivors include his three sons, Leslie Virgil Hughes, Lyle Wayne Hughes and Lowell Gene Hughes, all of Ravenswood; brother, Raymond Hughes of Barboursville; and a sister-in-law, Hazel Casto Hughes of Ravenswood; grandchildren, Cindy Hughes Mullins, Allen Hughes, Lance Hughes, Stacy Hughes, Patricia Hughes Linkous, Christopher Hughes, Jessica Hughes, Matthew Hughes and Jacob Hughes; great-grandchildren, David Mullins, Evan Linkous and Austin Linkous; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, June 10, 2005, at Cedar Run United Methodist Church, Flatwoods Road, Ravenswood, with Rev. Verlin Camp officiating. Burial followed in Flatwoods Cemetery.
