Information: RITES FOR SGT. DAVID HOPKINS WILL BE HELD SATURDAY, 1 P.M. - Sgt. David M. Hopkins, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin O. Hopkins, 914 Henrietta St., was killed while serving with the Army in Vietnam. The youth was reported as missing in action by the Army during the first week of October and his parents were notified last week of the recovery of his body. According to the report, which did not give any details, the Army sergeant apparently fell from an unidentified watercraft and drowned. Sgt. Hopkins entered the service in January, completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He received advanced individual training at Fort Polk, La., and he received four expert marksmanship medals. The serviceman was assigned to Vietnam on June 26 and served in the Demilitarized Zone during the three months prior to his death. Sgt. Hopkins was recently awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for satisfactory performance in active ground combat against a hostile force, and at the time of his death, was a candidate for the Soldier-of-the-Month. The youth was a member of Boy Scout Troop 43 in Ravenswood for 10 years. He held several offices which included Junior Assistant Scoutmaster and was a member of the staff at Camp Kootaga, Walker. He was a Star Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Sgt. Hopkins graduated from Ravenswood High School in 1968 and was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church. The body of the deceased soldier arrived Tuesday at Chambers Funeral Home in Ravenswood. The funeral home was open to visitors from 2 p.m. yesterday and will be open all day today. The body will be taken to Parkersburg tomorrow and will be at Ogen Funeral Home after 10 p.m. tomorrow. Military graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. The body will lie in state for one hour before services at the Apostolic United Pentecostal Church at 3209 6th Ave. Parkersburg. The Rev. J. C. Cole will officiate at the services Saturday, with burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Parkersburg. In addition to his parents, he is survived by grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Hopkins; brothers, Terry and Brian, both at home. One sister, Faith Ann, preceded him in death.
