Information: Spencer Newspapers Inc. president and owner G. Foster Hedges Jr., 71, died Thursday at Roane General Hospital after a brief illness. Senior partner in the law firm of Hedges, Jones, Whittier and Hedges, he had served 16 years as president of First National Bank of Spencer before his retirement in 1984. Born at Spencer, son of the late G.F. Hedges Sr. and Elizabeth DePue Hedges, he was graduated from West Virginia University and the Vanderbilt College of Law. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mary Helen Hedges; sons, Daniel and John Hedges, both of Charleston, and David Hedges of Spencer; daughters, Marilyn Byrne and Katherine Hedges, both of Morgantown, Christine Hedges of Spencer, Mary Hedges of Northfield, Minn., Anne Hedges of Winterpark, Fla.; 19 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, James, and a sister, Marie Adams. Funeral services were held Sunday in the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. William Archambault officiating. Burial was in Eventide Cemetery.
