Death Notice:

Obituary Date: 1943-03-17

Information: Stephen Edward Hartley, small son of Pvt. And Mrs. Edward C. Hartley, formerly of Cottageville, died in St. Ann's Hospital, at Abilene, Texas, March 17, 1943, aged six months and 18 days. After having a cold for only a few days during which time he laughed and played continually, he became much worse Tuesday evening that attending physicians advised he be taken to a hospital. After a long night of fighting for each breath, the baby boy was so much worse that an operation to allow him to breathe was considered the only chance and a throat surgeon was called in to perform the tracheotomy. The operation completed, the baby was placed under an oxygen tent and about an hour afterwards his nurse had just given him a hypodermic injection, his slow breathing stopped at 11:52 a.m. Wednesday. The parents brought the body home to West Virginia and services were held in the Antioch church the following Sunday with the Rev. John Loudin in charge. Burial was on the knoll back of the church overlooking the little fellow's former home. Though our loneliness overwhelms us and the future lies empty ahead, it is of some comfort to know that in today's world of war and trouble, where there is no peace in life, our beloved little son is at peace forever and ever.
