Information: Exact date in February not determined   Stephen A. Hartley , retired farmer of Cottageville, died at the home of his son, Hoyt Hartley in Belpre at 5:15 Thursday afternoon. He was 96 years of age. Mr. Hartley was not only the oldest subscriber in point of years on the Herald subscription list, but also held the distinction and had for several years of having his name on the paper's subscription list longer than any other. He was one of Jackson County's well known farmers during the active years of his life and always resided in the Cottageville community until a few years ago when he moved with his son to Belpre. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was always active in community, county and state affairs. Survivors include five sons, Hoyt of Belpre, Theodore of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Charles H. of Morgantown, William of Troy, Ohio and Luther of Baltimore; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Loudin of Las Vegas, New Mexico and Mrs. Blaine Conner of Modesto, California, 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held Saturday morning at the Antioch church near Cottageville with Dr. Roy McCuskey officiating and the burial was in the church cemetery. The Vail undertakers were in charge.
