Obituary Date: 1936-09-25
Information: Lawrence H. Harrison, 36 year old farmer who lived near the Jackson-Kanawha County line, took his own life by shooting at his home Tuesday afternoon about 2 o'clock, September 22, 1936. He was dead when found. Harrison was lying in the bed with one foot bare and a hole torn through his chest by the charge from the shotgun. He had used his toe to pull the trigger of the gun, officials who investigated the accident, said. From all appearances he had placed the muzzle of the gun very close to his chest. His widow, Mrs. Zelma Harrison, said that he had threatened to kill himself several days ago. She said that he came home about noon on Tuesday, but refused to eat any lunch, and went into the room to rest. It was about two hours later when he fired the shot. The widow and eight children, the youngest five months old and the eldest twelve years, survive. Corbin Kiser was one of the first to reach the bedroom after Mrs. Harrison, who was standing on the porch, heard the shot. Mr. and Mrs. Kiser were passing the Harrison home when the wife of the victim sounded the alarm. Kiser stopped his car and investigated and summoned help. The funeral services will be held sometime today, members of the family said. Harrison lived near Fisher Chapel church on the Ripley-Charleston road. [from the Betty Kessel McIntyre obit collection]
