Information: William Wirt Hamilton, 66, former sheriff of Mercer county, and former postmaster at Bramwell, died at his home on Wallace street, Princeton, West Virginia, at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, December 2nd, following a long illness. He was a victim of diabetes, and had been an invalid for the past year. Funeral services were conducted at the home at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, December 4th, by Dr. W. E. Davis, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and Dr. Edward Stubblefield, pastor of the First Baptist church. Interment was made in Monte Vista cemetery. William Wirt Hamilton was the son of James M. and Malissa (Rhodes) Hamilton, pioneer citizens of Jackson county, West Virginia. He was born at Ripley, W. Va. on January 27, 1867 and was educated in the public schools of Jackson and Kanawha counties. He spent his youth on his father's farm, and at the age of 22 engaged in the grocery business in Charleston. After two years in that business he became associated with a large wholesale grocery in Charleston. In 1894 he moved to Bramwell where he represented a Chicago concern for six years, and in 1900 was appointed postmaster at Bramwell. Mr. Hamilton served 12 years in that position and in November 1912, he was elected sheriff of Mercer county, an office he filled with distinction from January 1, 1913 to January 1, 1917. When he became sheriff he moved to Princeton. On October 13, 1889, William Wirt Hamilton and Margaret Ellen Fauber, daughter of the late William H. and Elizabeth Fauber, of Charleston, were united in marriage. To this union was born one daughter, Laura May. Besides his widow, Mr. Hamilton leaves his daughter, Mrs. May Mabe, wife of James Claude Mabe, of Beckley; four grandchildren, Mrs. Charlie Payne of Morgantown, William Wirt, James C. and Margaret Mabe, of Beckley; one brother, John H. Hamilton of Charleston and three sisters, Mrs. Oscar Spencer of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, Mrs. John W. Cooke of Huntington and Miss Ersa Hamilton of Welch. Mr. Hamilton was a member of the Ivanhoe Commandery No. 10, Knights Templar, Beni Kedem Temple, and the Bramwell Masonic lodge. He had been a member of several other orders. In politics, he was a Republican.
