Information: Robert Akers, 98, of Matoaka, Mercer County, died last Sunday at his home following a brief illness. Born at Herndon, he was a retired mine electrician for Arista Coal Co., and was a member of the United Mine Workers Local No. 9781 at Herndon. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 651 of Matoaka, and a member of the Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 134 in Princeton. He is survived by four sons, Maurice of Matoaka, Russell of Beckley, Vadis of Ravenswood, and David of Indianapolis, Ind.; one daughter, Mrs. Merlin (Virginia) Bailey of Miramar, Fla.; one brother, George Akers of Beckley; one sister, Mrs. Alice Shrewsbury of Crab Orchard; 28 grandchildren; 47 greatgrandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday in Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Princeton, with the Rev. Arnold Akers officiating, assisted by the Rev. Earl Jenkins. Burial was in the Akers family cemetery near Matoaka.
