Information: Stephen Patrick Goodwin died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in Morgantown following a brief illness. Goodwin was the third son born to Robert Booth Goodwin and Lessie Mae Staats Goodwin. He was born May 23, 1947, in Ripley. He graduated from Southwest High School, Kansas City, Mo., in 1965. He returned to West Virginia and graduated from West Virginia University in 1969 and the West Virginia College of Law in 1972. He was a partner with Dinsmore and Shohl in Morgantown, after serving as a partner in his family law firm, Goodwin & Goodwin, for more than 30 years and operating his own law firm, Goodwin & Ware, Morgantown. He was married May 11, 1971, to Ellen Carte Gibson in Ripley. The couple raised their family in Mount Alto and both were active volunteers in their children's schools, Cottageville Elementary, Ripley Middle School and Ripley High School. An active volunteer and community member, Goodwin was interal in establishing a chapter of the American Heart Association in Ripley. He served on the West Virginia Board of Medicine and the WVU College of Law Visiting Committee and served as the 100th president of the WVU Alumni Association and was past chair of the West Virginia University Board of Govenors. Goodwin was named a Distinguished West Virginian in 2003 and was named Outstanding Alumnus by the West Virginia University Student Government Association in 2007. Goodwin is survived by his wife, Ellen Gibson Goodwin; three children and their spouses, Alyssa Goodwin Gregg and Patrick of Morgantown, Carte Patrick and Rochelle Goodwin of Charleston, and T. Ryan II and Aimee Goodwin of Pocahontas, Ill; and his beloved three grandchildren, Wesley Patrick Goodwin, Stephen James Gregg and Addyson Carolina Goodwin. He anxiously awaited the birth of two more grandchildren this year. He is survived by his older brothers and their wives, Joseph R. and Kathleen Goodwin of Charleston and Thomas R. and Kathryn Goodwin of Evans; three nieces and four nephews; 15 great-nieces and nephews; cousins and extended family. He is also survied by a foster daughter, Cheryl Carlson, and her daughter, Kelly Wilson, of Dallas, Texas. Goodwin was preceded in death by his parents and other family members, including his adored cousin, Margie Waugh. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley. Hours of visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at Waybright Funeral Home, 511 S. Church St., Ripley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the WVU Alumni Association Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund for the Stephen P.
