Information: A heart condition proved fatal to Dr. James Anderson Garnes, a native of Kenna, at his home in Charleston. He was believed to be the oldest practicing dentist in the state and at the time of his death was 82 years of age. Dr. Garnes suffered a heart attack about two months ago and a recurrence of the illness caused him to be taken to a Charleston hospital. Dr. Garnes had been practicing dentistry in the state more than 55 years. He was born in Jackson County July 12, 1866, the son of the late Franklin and Amanda Garnes. He attended Jackson County schools and a dental college in Louisville, Kentucky. Before studying dentistry, he taught in Jackson County schools. He practiced his profession in Clendenin and St. Albans before moving to Charleston 22 years ago. A member of the Clendenin Methodist Church, he was a life member of the Masonic Lodge of Clendenin. As a hobby, Dr. Garnes enjoyed violin making. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Catherine Rollins Garnes; a son, Clarence of Chillicothe, O.; four daughters, Mrs. R. E. Rader, of Dunbar; Mrs. R.D. Myers, Midland, Texas, Mrs. S.R. Raves, Azusa, Calif., and Mrs. G.F. Wilkinson, Charleston; a sister, Mrs. Una Bush of Ohio; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
