Information: Edward R. Foreman, 91 year old Civil War veteran and a former resident of Ripley, died at his home at Long Bottom, Ohio, last Saturday after a brief illness. He was the last Civil War veteran in Meigs County and one of the few who were still among the living in this section. He enlisted at the age of sixteen and served four years in the 9th West Virginia Infantry, Company C. He was appointed scout of that regiment. He was in the battles of Cloyd's Mountain, Cedar Creek, Halltown, Kernstown, Fisher's Hill, Lynchburg, Charleston, Lexington, New River, Fayettevlle, Summersville and many minor engagements. He received his discharge at Wheeling, July 27, 1865. He left the army unharmed and remained strong and active until the last few months. He was united in marriage February 7, 1864 to Martha J. Rice of Gallia County, Ohio, who preceded him in death February 5, 1931. To this union eleven children were born. The living are Charles E. Forman of Letart Falls, Ohio, N. G. Foreman of Millersport, Ohio, F. A. Foreman of Barlow, Ohio, John Foreman of Great Bend, Ohio, Mrs. Lillie Combs of Ripley, Mrs. Della Davis of Ravenswood, Mrs. Minerva Sutton and Mrs. Mary Hall, both of Bridgeport, Ohio. He has 37 g-children and several g-g-grandchildren. Several years ago Mr. Foreman, with his family, resided in Ripley and also Willow Grove, later moving to Meigs County, Ohio, where he spent the remainder of his life.
