Information: DEATH CLAIMS RIPLEY'S ""MR. FOURTH OF JULY'' - Donald Lee Flesher, 87, fondly referred to as ""Mr. Fourth of July"" by two generations of Jackson countians, died early Tuesday evening at Jackson General Hospital. He had been admitted Monday from Ravenswood Village Care Center where he had been a resident since July 23, 1992. Don, as he was affectionately known, directed the annual Ripley Independence Day celebration for decades while his wife, Jessie, took care of the paperwork associated with the daylong program. The Fleshers were selected by the 1992 Fourth of July Committee as parade marshals for the 1992 parade. However, Don was unable to participate and was represented by his two great-grandchildren, Rhianna Kristin and Rocky Lee Butler of Millwood. A story about Don and Jessie in the June 17, 1992, issue of THE JACKSON HERALD recalled highlights of their careers and activities in community service. In 1967 during the height of the Vietnam War, Don initiated a drive for gifts for servicemen in Vietnam in conjunction with Fourth of July celebration. The response was overwhelming and servicemen from everywhere wrote to him in appreciation. The walls of the Flesher home family room are filled with plaques and other memorabilia in recognition of Don's community involvement.
