Information: RAVENSWOOD - William Benjamin ""Bill"" Fleming, 87, of Ravenswood, went home to be with the Lord on July 6, 2011. He was born on April 11, 1924 in Ravenswood, the son of the late Will Henry and Elsye Hulme Fleming. He was a proud descendent of one of the earliest Ravenswood pioneer families. Bill grew up in Ravenswood and graduated from Ravenswood High School in 1942. He entered Duke University in 1942, but left after one semester to enlist in the service. He served in the United States Army in World War II, notably the European Theatre of Operations--Italy, Southern France and Germany. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After leaving the Army, he returned to college and graduated from Duke University in 1949. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Mr. Fleming was a Production Supervisor and retired from Kaiser Aluminum in 1982 after 28 years of service. He was a life-long member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Ravenswood where he served as a Ruling Elder, Trustee, and member of the Session for many years. He was a charter member of Ravenswood VFW Post 6669, Greenhills Country Club, the Fourteen Club, and the Ravenswood Junior Chamber of Commerce who chose him as ""Young Man of the Year"" in 1958. Bill served on the Ravenswood City Council and was on the Planning and Zoning Commission for 20 years. He was a member of the Lions Club for many years. Bill was active in the Ravenswood Little League program and coached in the Ravenswood Midget Basketball program. Mr. Fleming was an avid fan of all Ravenswood High School sports. He especially followed the high school track, cross country, and basketball teams. He was also a past president of the Ravenswood High Alumni Association. In recent years he became a member of the Kentucky Colonels and enjoyed weekly meeting with his buddies. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rowena Stone Fleming, Ravenswood WV; daughter, Christina Landis and husband Terry, Ripley WV; four sons, William H. Fleming and wife Kelly, Greenville SC, Rev. Benjamin S. Fleming and wife Cheryl, Carson City NV, Trent P. Fleming and wife Judy, Cincinnati OH, and Dr. Patrick M. Fleming and wife Leigh, Martinsburg WV; eleven grandchildren, Justin Landis and wife Amaris, Atlanta GA, Jared Landis, Arlington VA, Emily Hales and husband Todd, Durham NC, Will Fleming, Durham NC, Benjamin Fleming and wife Becky, Puyallup WA, Rebecca Fleming, Carson City NV, Amanda Fleming, Los Angeles CA, Traci Fleming and fiance Michael Graziani, Columbus OH, Christina Fleming, Cincinnati OH, and Thomas and Liza Fleming, Martinsburg WV; great-granddaughter, Charity Fleming, Puyallup WV; brother, David Fleming and wife Ouida, Evergreen, Alabama; and sister, Maree Skaff and husband Joseph, Charleston WV. The family would like to acknowledge his special caregiver, Stacie Mullins. In addition to his parents, a sister and a great-grandson preceded him in death. Services will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Ravenswood with Reverend Benjamin Fleming and Reverend Thomas Dummermuth officiating. Friends may visit the family at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood WV, on Friday, July 8, from 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackson County Public Library, Ravenswood Branch, 323 Virginia Street, Ravenswood WV 26164.
