Information: George Perry Fleming was born December 25, 1838, at Ravenswood, W.Va.,(Virginia) and passed away at his late home in Ravenswood, January 9, 1929, having celebrated his 90th birthday Christmas day of 1928. Mr. Fleming was a son of Bartholomew Fleming and Hannah Warth Fleming. Bartholomew having come to Ravenswood from Pittsburgh, Pa., at the age of 16 years in the year 1820, and was the first man to purchase a plot of ground in Ravenswood, this ground being secured from the Fitzhughs family through George Washington. ""Uncle George,"" as Mr. Fleming was known through the community, joined the Confederate army in 1862 and served through the Civil War. In the early fall of the year 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Louise Mills of Ripley and together they spent their entire married life of 64 years in Ravenswood. In the year of 1867 Mr. Fleming entered business with his father, who conducted a wood yard, and a few years later took over the business for himself, running it for a number of years until he became owner of the wharfboat at Ravenswood and was wharf-master until he retired from active life some ten or twelve years ago. Mr. Fleming was always very active in the community, his pleasing personality making him a friend to everyone, and he was always found ready to do anything he could for the good of his town as well as for his fellow man. He was a devout christian, a member of the Ravenswood M.E. Church, South, and as long as his health would permit he was a most faithful attendant at all services of the church. He was a member of Ashton Lodge No. 12, A.F. & A.M. of Ravenswood, having joined that order February 19, 1878, almost 51 years ago. Mr. Fleming is survived by his widow, Louise Mills Fleming, and the following children: Mrs. Gertrude Hustler, who is at home and has cared for the father and mother in a most tender and loving way; Will Henry Fleming, hardward dealer, and Frank Derwood Fleming, grocer, both of Ravenswood, and Pembroke Eugene Fleming, who is in business in Point Pleasant; also two brohers and two sisters, Henry Clay Fleming, Ravenswood, Winfield Scott Fleming, Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Emma Polsene and Miss Carrie Fleming, both of Ravenswood, and seven grand-children. Aside from his many other accomplishments, Mr. Fleming was a violinist worthy of mention and in spite of his years he was able to handle his violin in a pleasing as well as entertaining manner. Funeral services were conducted from the Ravenswood M.E. Methodist Church, South, on Friday afternoon, January 11, the pastor, Rev. Mr. Ware officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. W.E. Keenan of Spencer, a very dear friend as well as a former pastor of the deceased. The interment was conducted by the members of Ashton Lodge A.F. & A. M., with members of Ables-Rayburn Post 118 of the American Legion forming a military honor guard in respect to his military service.
