Obituary Date: 1947-12-26
Information: One Ripley youth was killed instantly and another died about two hours later at the Starcher Hospital here Saturday night after the automobile in which they were riding plunged down an embankment near the home of B. R. BROTHERTON about three miles north of Ripley on Rt. 21. Robert Eugene EVANS, 17 year old son of Mrs. Audra EVANS of 7th Street, Ripley, was hurled 81 feet from the car onto the lawn at the BROTHERTON home and was killed instantly. James Dorsel COBB, 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest COBB, also of 7th Street, Ripley, was found some distance from EVANS and nearer the wrecked car, but was still alive and was rushed to the hospital but died without ever regaining consciousness. Officers found that the two youths had borrowed the car from a guest at the EVANS home and had driven north on Rt. 21 and had apparently lost control of the car as it was being driven down the north side of Nigger Hill. The body of COBB was taken to the Parsons Funeral Home where it remained until Sunday when taken to the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas COBB at Wellford, Kanawha County. Funeral services were conducted there at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. Early ABBOTT in charge and burial was in the BOARD Cemetery. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest COBB of Ripley, and three sisters, Mrs. Eric EASTER of Charleston, and Phyllis and Siby Jane COBB, both of Ripley. Funeral services for EVANS will be held at the Walton Union Church Tuesday morning at 10:30 with Rev. Orland REYNOLDS in charge and burial will be in a cemetery there. The boy's father, Ralph EVANS, was killed some time ago when the tractor he was operating overturned and crushed him to death. The survivors of the EVANS youth include his mother, Mrs. Audra EVANS; four sisters, Ruby, Virginia, Rosalee and Frances, and two brothers, James Ralph Jr. and Roger Bruce EVANS, all of Ripley.
