Obituary Date: 1940-04-05
Information: Circuit Clerk Okey Ellison, age 52, died at 2:25 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at his home here after a long illness. Mr. Ellison, who had been suffering from a rare heart ailment since March 11, 1939, and who had fought a valiant but losing battle against the ravages of the strange, incurable disease, became critically ill last Friday at his home but rallied somewhat during the weekend. About midnight Tuesday, members of the family said that he began to lose ground rapidly and from that time until death came he was unconscious a greater part of the time. In 1938 he was elected by the voters of the county to serve as Circuit Clerk but was permitted to serve actively in that capacity for little more than a month when illness occurred. He sought the aid of specialist who found that his heart condition was incurable. Born on Aug 10, 1877, near Given, he was a son of Jesse C. and Clara (Parsons) Ellison, and lived a greater part of his life in Jackson county. Besides his wife, Georgia Shinn Ellison, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Clara Ellison, of Ripley, a daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Rhodes of Parkersburg, and a sister, Hattie Ellison of Ripley. Funeral arrangements are not complete. The Vail Mortuary will be in charge. [Burial was in the Fairplain Cemetery] [Betty Kessel McIntyre obit collection]
